Controversial Catholic Campaign for Human Development Defended

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is a controversial program of the US bishops.  Some critics question the particular organizations funded by the CCHD.  Others question the basic philosophy of funding organizations that empower people for social change rather than providing direct service funding.  Father Peter Val, Executive Director Emeritus of Girls and Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska, recently took the CCHD to task in the cyber-pages of First Things magazine. Now comes a reply in the same magazine from Richard L. Wood, a consultant to the US bishops’ subcommittee on CCHD.

The debate continues.
