The pontiff met with the secretary of state amid Trumpʼs ongoing criticism of the Holy Father and the Vatican.
On Thursday Pope Leo XIV met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Vatican, with the meeting coming amid tensions between the Holy See and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump has expressed his disapproval of Leoʼs public statements denouncing the U.S.-led war on Iran. The Holy Father has repeatedly called for peace amid the ongoing conflict.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Department of State, the pontiff and Rubio discussed “the situation in the Middle East and topics of mutual interest in the Western Hemisphere.”

It also stated that their meeting “underscored the strong relationship between the United States and the Holy See and their shared commitment to promoting peace and human dignity.”
The Holy See published its own statement of the meeting, which, according to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, lasted for 45 minutes.
The statement described the meeting as an encounter where “cordial discussions” took place regarding the “fostering of strong bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States of America.”

This week Trump expressed his desire that Rubio tell the pope that “Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.” The president has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that Leo wants the Middle Eastern country to develop nuclear armaments.
Leo has rejected those allegations. On May 5 at Castel Gandolfo he stated that the Church “has spoken for years against all nuclear weapons.” On Wednesday, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin stated that the Holy See “has always worked, and will continue to work, on nuclear disarmament.”
Parolin, who also met Rubio on May 7, also described Trumpʼs recent verbal attacks against the pope as “strange.”

I doubt that Pope Leo wants Iran having nuclear weapons.
He then needs to come up with a plan. Obama’s idea of giving them billions failed. But that’s typicalbof leftists who thinking buying people off is effective at changing brhavior.
I doubt that also. But as Pope he has to be more discrete in what he says and can’t express that in the same way secular leaders do.
The Holy Father has explicitly upheld the Church teaching that nuclear weapons are evil and no one should have them.
Anypne can spout empty platitudes about peace and unity. Leo should come up with a plan then to deal with Iran’s nuclear weapon aspirations since he wants to be actively involved in geopolitics. .
Yes, and maybe he should start with Russia and China. I’m sure those peace-loving nations would be willing to destroy their nuclear arsenals in the interests of world peace.
I hope that Secratary Rubio set the Pope straight on a number of matters pertaining to his leftist political ideology.
Rubio looked relaxed with Pope Leo. With Trump, Rubio looks like a hostage.
William: your TDS isn’t getting any better. Any treatment you sought for it has failed. Go ask for a refund.
TDS? Oh, Trump Deification Syndrome which appears to afflict you and others. He could say anything, literally anything and you would slavishly agree with him. The uncritical hero worship of him by MAGA is amazing.
He’s not a hostage but rather a collaborator. The reason he looks uncomfortable is because he is probably at least a minimally decent human going against his conscience. Or possibly that the constant contact with evil makes anyone of good conscience uncomfortable.
Your assumptions are patently false. Rubio is doing a great job as secretary of state. He is poised, productive, and seems to have left behind his RINO leanings. Trump is not evil, and it is inappropriate for you to be using those descriptive terms in reference to him, either directly or indirectly. Grow up and do better. You might feel more at home on a leftist site.
Rubio has made a Faustian bargain. Selling your soul might work in the short run, but in the long run, not so much.
Politics usually involves haggling & settling for less. You can’t get everything you want & have to compromise a little to effect a deal. That differs from selling one’s soul to satan. (Which isn’t Trump.)
Suzanne, like all leftists you sound smug and superior.
