The pope bluntly rejected the proposition that French political leaders could separate their public mission from their interior convictions. This comes perhaps serendipitously at a time when American hierarchy are at odds over the Cupich Durbin award.
Whether and how Leo XIV addresses Cardinal Cupich’s award proposal, for support of migrants and the poor, a morally legitimate cause – can prove significant. If Leo XIV instead decides to focus on Durbin’s egregious abortion policies it could prove a turning point toward greater clarity on affirming Apostolic doctrine.
RE: “Young Men Seek Truth and Purpose, Not Compromise Christianity” This piece is spot on but I will provide a timeline. As a young Marine in the early 1980s I was very clearly aware of the attack on masculinity. My active duty experience was in stark contrast to what was being presented in popular civilian culture. I could recognize it then. (“Toxic Masculinity” being a more recent, egregious term.) I have been aware of the attack on masculinity for over 40 years. No doubt one of the reasons (of many!) that I have embraced the TLM is because of its unequivocal call to masculinity in its preaching and its ecclesial practice. Young men do not want “Gentle Jesus, come and squeeze us.” They want and need the cited Romans 5:3.
Over the weekend I caught an old Nelson Eddy & Jeannette MacDonald movie. One of the songs was “Stouthearted Men”. That’s what we need more of today I think. It’s a pretty catchy tune, too:
“Give me some men who are stout-hearted men
Who will fight for the right they adore
Start me with ten who are stout-hearted men
And I’ll soon give you ten thousand more-ore
Shoulder to shoulder, and bolder and bolder
They grow as they go to the fore
Then there’s nothing in the world
Can halt or mar a plan
When stout-hearted men
Can stick together – man – to man…”
Thank you Mrscracker for the reminder. In my small rural grade school in the 1950’s our music lesson was for the whole school to assemble and sing songs from a music sheet. I always remembered that we sang the songs of the four military branches, but Stout Hearted Men was also on the song sheet. It brings back memories.
Maybe a response in conspicuous clarity, but Vatican politics is also an artform.
The Pope could simply solicit and accept simultaneously Cardinal Cupich’s resignation, now that he’s above the age of 75 (turned 76 on March 19). An “informal, spontaneous and non-liturgical” half-blessing (as invented in Fiducia Sujpplicans!) as he goes out with a blaze of glory.
