Vatican City, Aug 31, 2025 / 07:10 am (CNA).
Pope Leo XIV on Sunday prayed for the victims of a shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis, and deplored a worldwide “pandemic of arms” which has left many children dead or injured.
“Our prayers for the victims of the tragic shooting during a school Mass in the American state of Minnesota,” the pontiff said in English on Aug. 31, after leading the weekly Angelus prayer from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square.
“We include in our prayers,” he added, “the countless children killed and injured every day around the world. Let us plead to God to stop the pandemic of arms, large and small, which infects our world.”
An Aug. 27 shooting at a school Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis left two children dead and 17 others wounded.
Leo turned to Mary, the Queen of Peace, to ask for her intercession “to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: ‘They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.’”

In his other appeals after the Angelus, delivered in Italian, Pope Leo repeated his calls for an immediate ceasefire and “a serious commitment to dialogue” in the Middle East, and for prayer and concrete gestures for the victims of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“The voice of arms must be silenced, while the voice of brotherhood and justice must be raised,” he said.
The pope said his heart is also wounded for those who have died or are missing after a boat carrying migrants from Africa to the Canary Islands capsized off the coast of Mauritania. According to the BBC, at least 69 people have died and many others are missing.
“This mortal tragedy repeats every day everywhere in the world,” Leo said. “Let us pray that the Lord teaches us, as individuals and as a society, to put fully into practice his word: ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me.’”
“We entrust all our missing, injured, and dead everywhere to our Savior’s loving embrace,” the pontiff said both in English and in Italian.
In his spiritual message before the Angelus prayer, Pope Leo spoke about encounter, which requires openness of heart and humility.

“Humility is really freedom from ourselves,” he emphasized. “It is born when the Kingdom of God and its righteousness become our real concern and we allow ourselves to lift up our eyes and look ahead: not down at our feet, but at what lies ahead!”
Leo said people who put themselves before others, tend to think they are more interesting than anything else, “yet deep down, they are quite insecure.”
“Whereas,” he continued, “those who know that they are precious in God’s eyes, who know they are God’s children, have greater things to be worried about; they possess a sublime dignity all their own.”
The pope reflected on Jesus’ example of how to be a good guest, as described in the day’s Gospel reading; Jesus “acts with respect and sincerity, avoiding merely polite formalities that preclude authentic encounter,” Leo explained.
To extend an invitation to another person, also shows “a sign of openness of heart,” he added.
The pontiff encouraged everyone to invite Jesus to be their guest at Mass, so that he can tell them how it is he sees them.
“It is very important that we see ourselves through his eyes: to see how frequently we reduce life to a competition, how anxious we become to obtain some sort of recognition, and how pointlessly we compare ourselves to others,” he said.
We experience the freedom Jesus wants for us, he added, when we stop to reflect and let ourselves “be taken aback by a word that challenges our hearts’ priorities.”

Vatican City, Oct 12, 2017 / 11:39 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis sent a video message Thursday for the 300th anniversary of the discovery of the statue of Our Lady of Aparecida, whose simple smile, he said, is a source of encouragement even during the most difficult times.
“The simple smile of Mary, which we can see in her image, is the source of the smile of each one of you in the face of the difficulties of life,” he said Oct. 12.
“The Christian can never be pessimistic!”
Recalling his first international apostolic visit, to Brazil in 2013, Francis said that visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in São Paulo was an occasion of joy and grace for him.
Repeating the message of his visit, the Pope said that at Aparecida “we learn to preserve hope, to be surprised by God, and to live in joy.”
Hope, he insisted, is the virtue that must “permeate the hearts” of believers, especially when discouraged by desperate situations: “Do not let yourselves be overcome by discouragement. Have trust in God, have trust in the intercession of Our Mother of Aparecida.”
The Pope’s video message was sent to the people of Brazil Oct. 12 for the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Our Lady of Aparecida, the country’s patroness.
“What I leave here are simple words, but I want you to receive them as a fraternal embrace at this time of celebration,” he said.
The story behind the feast involves a clay statue of Mary Immaculate that was caught by three fishermen in Brazil in October 1717 while they were preparing for a feast dedicated to royalty passing through the town.
Guarantinqueta, a small city along the Paraiba River, was expecting to receive the Count of Assumar on his travels to a gold mining site in Vila Rica.
The feast required a vast amount of fish, but it was not the right season and weather conditions proved challenging. After a night of fishing, the men caught nothing.
Having prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the fishermen caught in their nets the body of the statue and then the head.
After the statue was brought aboard the boat, the men decided to pray to “Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida” – Our Lady of the Appeared Conception – to help them catch the fish. Their nets suddenly became very full, and the catch has been considered a miracle.
This miracle encouraged them to have confidence in God, Pope Francis said. With that miracle God surprised them, for he “who created us in infinite Love always surprises us,” he underlined.
At the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, he said, as well as in every heart devoted to Mary, we can find hope “embodied in the experience of spirituality, generosity, solidarity, perseverance, fraternity, joy, these values which in turn sink their roots deeper into the Christian faith.”
At the beginning of April the Pope had sent a letter to Brazil’s president apologizing for his inability to visit the country in 2017.
President Michael Temer had invited Pope Francis to visit Brazil for the 300th anniversary of the Marian apparition, and in 2013, Francis had expressed the desire to visit during the anniversary if possible.
In his video message, Francis reiterated how he would have liked to be with the people of Brazil during this jubilee year, saying that unfortunately, “the life of a Pope is not easy.”
Instead he nominated Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, vice-dean of the College of Cardinals, to be his papal delegate for the Oct. 12 celebrations. “To him I entrusted the mission to ensure the Pope’s presence among you!” he said.
Though not able to be physically present, he expressed the wish that his affection be felt by the people of Brazil, devoted to the Mother of God.
Closing his message, the Pope thanked the Brazilian people for their prayers, especially at Mass, asking them to continue to pray for him, knowing that he is praying for them as well.
Brazil, he continued, needs men and women who, full of hope and faith, “witness that love, manifested in solidarity and in sharing, is stronger and brighter than the darkness of selfishness and corruption.”
“Together, near or far, we form the Church, the People of God,” he said. “Every time we work together, even if in a simple and subtle way, for the announcement of the Gospel, we become, like Mary, authentic disciples and missionaries.”

Rome Newsroom, Aug 16, 2025 / 04:00 am (CNA).
Saturday, Aug. 16, marks Pope Leo XIV’s 100th day as pope. Since his May 8 election as the first pope born and raised in the United States, the 69-year-old Chicago native has already left his mark on a jubilee year filled with papal liturgies and a surge in pilgrim enthusiasm.
Here are some of the highlights of the first 100 days of the new Holy Father:
Papal jubilee: Pope Leo offers 16 public Masses in 14 weeks
Pope Leo XIV began his papacy in the heart of the Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, and he made the most of this opportunity to interact with Catholic pilgrims from across the globe by offering many Masses with the public.

Leo XIV offered 16 large public Masses in just 14 weeks — an average of more than one per week — including seven Masses in June alone. The pace marks a significant shift from the final years of Pope Francis’ pontificate when the aging pope was unable to offer Mass himself at the altar. Francis was present at only four Masses with the public in the same time period last year.
The papal Masses have drawn large crowds and significant attention, beginning with his first inaugural Mass, which brought 200 foreign delegations — including heads of state and royalty — to the Vatican. Since then, Leo has celebrated liturgies for the jubilees of Families, Priests, and Youth as well as on major solemnities and feasts including Pentecost, Corpus Christi, the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Holy Trinity, Sts. Peter and Paul, and Mary, Mother of the Church.

A singing pope
One of Pope Leo’s most unexpected moments came during his first Regina Caeli address, when he stunned a crowd of 200,000 in St. Peter’s Square by singing the Marian hymn rather than reciting it in Latin like his recent predecessors. Since then, he has continued chanting during liturgies and leading crowds in sung versions of the Our Father in Latin.
The move inspired the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music to launch “Let’s Sing with the Pope,” an online series aimed at making Gregorian chant more accessible.

First American pope on White Sox stadium jumbotron
In June, the first pope born and raised in the United States appeared on the jumbotron at a gathering of American Catholics at Chicago’s Rate Field — home of his beloved White Sox. In a video message delivered entirely in English, Pope Leo urged young people to be “beacons of hope” and invited all to see that “God is reaching out to you, calling you, inviting you to know his son, Jesus Christ.”
It was the pope’s first direct address to his hometown since his election and one of the earliest papal speeches given entirely in English.

The new pope’s love of sports has led to some memorable moments. He blessed 159 cyclists as they passed through Vatican City in the final leg of the Giro d’Italia.
A self-described “amateur tennis player,” Pope Leo XIV joked with tennis star Jannik Sinner, ranked the world’s No. 1, whether his white cassock would meet Wimbledon’s requirement for all white attire.

The pope has also been gifted White Sox and Bears jerseys and has signed baseballs for enthusiastic pilgrims.
A voice for peace in Gaza and Ukraine
Pope Leo XIV’s first words were “Peace be with you all,” recalling the first greeting of the risen Christ recorded in Scripture. As wars continued and at times intensified during Pope Leo’s first months, the pope has continued to be a voice for peace.
In June, after U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Pope Leo urged world leaders “to stop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable abyss.” Following an Israeli strike that killed three people at Gaza’s only Catholic church in July, he appealed for “a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and full respect for humanitarian law.”
“Today more than ever, humanity cries out and pleads for peace,” the pope said during an Angelus from the window of the Apostolic Palace.
Leo also met with bishops and pilgrims from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Castel Gandolfo in July, where the two discussed the urgency of “just and lasting paths of peace,” according to the Vatican.

Leo carries the Eucharist through the streets of Rome
Pope Leo personally carried the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Rome during a Corpus Christi procession from the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran to the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
“Together, as shepherds and flock, we will feed on the Blessed Sacrament, adore him, and carry him through the streets,” he said. “In doing so, we will present him before the eyes, the consciences, and the hearts of the people.”
More than 20,000 people turned out for Leo XIV’s first Eucharistic procession as pope.

Return to Castel Gandolfo
Pope Leo revived the papal tradition of spending summer days at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo. During his two-week stay in July, he led public Masses in local parishes, greeted pilgrims as he led the Angelus prayer in Liberty Square, and received visiting dignitaries. His stay marks the first papal summer retreat in the lakeside town since the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI.

Pope Leo introduces the world to great quotes by St. Augustine
A member of the Augustinian order, Pope Leo has quoted St. Augustine in nearly every one of his homilies as pope. In his first public words on May 8, he said: “I am an Augustinian, a son of St. Augustine, who once said, ‘With you I am a Christian, and for you I am a bishop.’”
Addressing 1 million young people at the Jubilee of Youth in August, he quoted Augustine’s “Confessions”: “You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness… I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more.”

A focus on artificial intelligence
Pope Leo has frequently spoken about artificial intelligence (AI), which is already shaping up to be a topic of interest in his pontificate with many hoping that he will address it in an encyclical.
Early on in his pontificate, Leo drew parallels between his namesake Pope Leo XIII, who responded to the industrial revolution with Rerum Novarum, and today’s digital revolution, explaining that the rise of AI poses “new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and labor.”
“Humanity is at a crossroads, facing the immense potential generated by the digital revolution driven by artificial intelligence,” he warned in a message to the Geneva-based AI for Good Summit. “The impact of this revolution is far-reaching, transforming areas such as education, work, art, health care, governance, the military, and communication.”

The Vatican website received a revamp shortly after Leo’s election, and insiders noted Leo’s relatively tech-savvy background, including a personal Twitter account prior to his papacy.
The pope also expressed concern in a speech to another AI conference about the negative effects that AI can have on the “intellectual and neurological development” of rising generations and the “loss of the sense of the human” that societies are experiencing.
Leo declares a new doctor of the Church
In one of his most significant theological gestures, Pope Leo named St. John Henry Newman, a 19th-century English convert from Anglicanism, a doctor of the Church — a rare title given to just 37 other saints. The title is granted in recognition of an already canonized saint’s significant contribution to advancing the Church’s knowledge of doctrine, theology, or spirituality.

Leo also approved the upcoming canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati in September as the first saints of his pontificate. He greenlit seven additional causes for canonization, including that of Blessed Bartolo Longo, a former satanist turned founder of the Marian shrine in Pompeii.
Carrying the cross before a million young people at the Jubilee of Youth
Pope Leo addressed the largest crowd of his papacy to date at the Jubilee of Youth, where an estimated 1 million young adults camped out in fields in Tor Vergata, southeast of Rome.
He surprised them by walking through the crowd to the stage, personally carrying the jubilee cross. During the evening vigil, he answered youth questions in English, Italian, and Spanish, offering reflections on loneliness, discernment, and friendship with Christ.

After Eucharistic adoration, chants of “Papa Leone!” echoed long into the night. Leo stayed past 10 p.m. — well beyond the scheduled end.
Earlier in the week, he made a surprise appearance at the opening Mass, joyfully proclaiming in English: “Jesus tells us: You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world!” and the crowd erupted in cheers.
The Holy Father will stay in Cameroon one more night before traveling to Angola on April 18. […]

Pope Leo xiv worries about a pandemic of arms instead of ending the homosexual/pedophilia epidemic running rampant within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and what about the entire transgender issue which has caused the real reason for the mental health problem in the US in which he is loudly silent. If you compete flick, then start doing it.
There are the “firearm means” on the one hand, and the “LGBTQetc motivation” on the other. It would be equally absurd to decry the slaughter of innocent Catholics in Africa, and ignore the declared Islamic Unholy War. And yet this blinkered cowardice – was not Pius XII criticised for not denouncing Nazism directly – is nothing new.
The argument used to defend Pius XII was that he feared reprisals against innocents for his denouncing the Motivation. We can only conclude that ppLeoXIV is afraid of LGBTQetc Madmen Jihad activists?
Sigh. The Holy Father might have noticed with horror the satanism that pervades Westman’s manifesto. He could have lamented the evil “trans gender” butchery Westman had done on himself (with plenty of help from medical professionals and eventual acceptance from his family) and his marijuana use. Even the twisted killer bitterly regretted indulging in both vices. The HF might also have observed that the murderer’s parents divorced when he was young and pointed out the harmful and far-reaching consequences of broken families. Finally, he could have squarely faced up to the reality that this was, in an important respect, an “inside” attack. Westman came from a Catholic family and graduated from the Catholic school he attacked so viciously years later. Instead, we get a USCCB talking point on the evils of guns. Sadly predictable.
Tony W: You are so very right in all that youveso eloquently said. The fact is we have a woke hierarchy in the Catholic Church. I call them woke rather than apostate.
But does Pope Leo lament the epidemic of transgenderism and homosexuality in society? Of course not. And the lies, half-truths and obfuscations continue.
Sad but true. I just read this morning that Leo had a private meeting with James Martin, SCH. Somehow I don’t think the new pope called him to repentance. Some things never change.
Follow up on your comment Athanasius:
“VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV met Monday with one of the most prominent advocates for greater LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Catholic Church and encouraged his ministry, just days before a planned Holy Year pilgrimage of LGBTQ+ Catholics to the Vatican in a sign of continued welcome.
The Rev. James Martin, a New York-based Jesuit author and editor, said Leo told him he intended to continue Pope Francis’ policy of LGBTQ+ acceptance in the church and encouraged him to keep up his advocacy.
‘I heard the same message from Pope Leo that I heard from Pope Francis, which is the desire to welcome all people, including LGBTQ people,’ Martin told The Associated Press after the audience. ‘It was wonderful. It was very consoling and very encouraging and frankly a lot of fun'” (Nicole Winfield for ABC7 News).
Tony W. above (7:00 p.m.) – Amen.
It’s hard to believe that Leo, as an American, wouldn’t realize what he was getting into with his statement. Sure enough, the so-called mainstream media are running with it.
My hope is that he will get a new speechwriter ASAP.
Vatican Communications Man: James Martin, who spread blasphemous images mocking the Blessed Virgin Mary across Internet- is spinning a 30 minute meeting with Pope Leo into a declaration by Pope Leo that he is a supporter of the LGBTQetc Ideology regularly behind mass shootings.
Pope Leo sold out to the LGBTQETC Ideology? The Ideology of the Prince of Lies?
I am SO disappointed. POPE Leo xiv’s image is being removed from my home.
It should be apparent to a Roman pontiff in this historically unique setting in which we are facing multiple issues, sexual disorders, weapons violence, controversy over global warming and corresponding need for environmental care – in the context of apostasy and depredation of religion that circumspect pronouncement to Church and world has not and will not have effect.
Leo XIV can be effective if he spoke directly to the issues, especially in regards to Catholic turned deranged murderer Robert Westman. His sexual disorientation as Robin Westman has to be called out directly and clearly, yes with compassion. Otherwise Church and world will brush off Leo’s marshmallow mellowness, his politically correct schizophrenic focus on guns rather than the moral sickness of the persons who fire the guns.
Don’t like to pile it on but it cannot be prudently ignored as to where an appealing, congenial new pontiff really stands. However far to the right he may seem to some, I cannot better express my personal thoughts than John-Henry Westen:
“This is the nightmare scenario I warned of at the start of Leo’s papacy. As I told Glenn Beck: a less bombastic pope could quietly cement a false new direction. The James Martin approach defies Christ, His Church, Scripture, and 2,000 years of tradition” (John-Henry Westen LifeSiteNews).
A marker was Pope Leo’s selection to replace Archbishop Paglia on family matters with Msgr Renzo Pegoraro, Paglia’s loyal assistant instead of Cdl Willem Eijk, a member of the same Dicastery Pontifical Academy for Life. Simply couldn’t disassociate that from a man who wasn’t doctrinally attuned to Pope Francis.
It’s a darn good thing that my Catholic faith does not in any way depend on the orthodoxy/sanctity/truthfulness of priests, bishops and Popes. If it did, I’d be gone a long time ago.
The Democratic Platform, by denying The Sanctity of the marital act within The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, ipso facto denies God’s intention for respect for the Sanctity of all human life, from the moment of conception until natural death, thus a “pontifical “ repeat of The Democratic Platform would ipso facto separate one from The One Body Of Christ, From The Father, Through, With, And In His Only Begotten Son, Jesus The Christ, In The Unity (Communion)Of The Holy Ghost, The Spirit Of Perfect Divine Eternal Love Between The Father And His Only Begotten Son, Jesus The Christ, Who Proceeds From The Father And His Only Begotten Son, Jesus The Christ, thus denying The Divinity Of The Most Holy Blessed Trinity, which is apostasy.
The counterfeit magisterium that has aligned itself with apostates must be charitably anathema:
At the heart of Liberty Is Christ, “4For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, have tasted also the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5Have moreover tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come…”, to not believe that Christ’s Sacrifice On The Cross will lead us to Salvation, but we must desire forgiveness for our sins, and accept Salvational Love, God’s Gift Of Grace And Mercy; believe in The Power And The Glory Of Salvation Love, and rejoice in the fact that No Greater Love Is There Than This, To Desire Salvation For One’s Beloved.
“Hail The Cross, Our Only Hope.”
“Blessed are they who are Called to The Marriage Supper Of The Lamb.”
“For where your treasure is there will your heart be also.”
“Behold your Mother.” – Christ On The Cross
“Penance, Penance, Penance.”- The Angel of Fatima
May those whose competence it is Call a Council that will anathema the counterfeit church, from The True Church Of Christ, so that Our Blessed Mother’s Heart Can Triumph and restore Peace to Christ’s One, Holy, Catholic, And Apostolic Church, outside of which, there is no Salvation, due to The Unity Of The Holy Ghost (Filioque).
And may the error of Vatican II, which by no longer recognizing The Spirit of The Charitable Anathema, Instituted By Christ, Himself, leading to the creation of a counterfeit anti Christ church attempting to subsist within The One Body Of Christ, that is anti Filioque, and thus anti Papacy, which , in denying The Unity Of The Holy Ghost, denies The Word Of God Incarnate, Our Only Savior, Jesus Christ, Who Has Revealed Himself To His Church, Through The Deposit Of Faith, Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, And The Teaching Of The True Magisterium, Grounded In Sacred Tradition And Sacred Scripture, for The Salvation Of Souls, be charitably anathema, by affirming The Unity Of The Holy Ghost (Filioque), and thus affirming The Divinity Of The Most Holy And Undivided Blessed Trinity.
🙏💕
It appears the darnel is still being allowed to flourish in the field of otherwise good wheat.
The Catechism clearly teaches 2357 -2359 the truth on a matter which is a trial for many.
Indeed upholding chastity is a challenge for us all.
Catholic Pastoral accompaniment must always respect the Catechism, Principles of non contradiction and not undermine the Deposit of Faith.
Today’s evidence is not encouraging.
Let’s see what the Pontiff may state.
Evangelization and conversion are ongoing and never-ending opportunities. The Good News is waiting to be taken to the doorsteps of every heart in every continent.

Woe to those who call evil, good!
