@ Does Just War Doctrine Require Moral Certainty?
Dr Feser’s argument including the supporting views of Leo XIV are precisely correct. Correct, that is if we are living in the 19th century. Incorrect today in a world of high tech maneuverability and deception, and the ability to deliver an annihilating attack within mere minutes.
Feser does not adequately respond to the baseline question – whether today in a world entirely different in terms of technology and immediate destructive capacity – a nation has justification to remove that threat if the likelihood of such an attack is imminent. When that nation has repeatedly vowed its “death”, and acquires this capacity to annihilate it. That, regardless of a president Trump’s bloviating.
Fr. M:
I agree on the root problem with the case made by Ed Feser.
This is an extremely difficult situation with the Islamic Revolution Regime running Iran (which I will call the IRRI) as their national policy is a DECLARATION of a PERMANENT STATE OF WAR with the US and Israel.
My own conclusion is that the only just way to respond to them is an UNRELENTING NAVAL BLOCKADE and DESTRUCTION of EVERY VISIBLE MILITARY ASSET, and enabling armed insurrection inside Iran, until the IRR surrenders and agrees to completely disarm and defund their IRR Army of Hezbollah holding Lebanon hostage.
It appears Chris the Administration is going to pursue that strategy. Hopefully it will be expedient and with minimal casualties.
“… the Trump administration has made evident that it had no feasible plan to avoid plunging the world into entirely foreseeable economic chaos, has deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure, and even threatened that “a whole civilization will die” if demands are not met.
Some Catholics disagree with this peremptory judgment. But the more sober among them, while making a case for the war, acknowledge that the conflict is problematic. ”

I guess it doesn’t make me “sober” but I don’t see the problem. I do see the risk & uncertainty but those don’t outweigh the gains so far.
Agree 100%

Furthermore, insofar as cause and effect: A just cause should be tailored to a good effect. Although the resultant good or evil of the effect does not determine the validity or invalidity of the cause.
I disagree with the idea that “moral certainty” is a Just War Principle, because going to war is a PRUDENTIAL DECISION, which is forced upon men because of the uncertainties of the threats confronting them. To hold that one must have MORAL CERTAINTY is to remove the problem from the domain of prudential decision-making, and invite paralysis.
