Last week, Massachusetts’ Democratic governor Maura Healey signed a law removing existing restrictions on late-term abortion, thereby legalizing it to the moment of birth. The move has prompted widespread outrage, as has the ghoulish signing ceremony in which the governor was surrounded by jubilant women applauding this license to murder children. Republican partisans have cited this episode as evidence of the depravity into which the Democratic Party has fallen. And it is true that the Democrats remain worse on the issue of abortion than the GOP.
But another and uncomfortable truth is that the Republican Party is itself worse on the issue than it was a little over two years ago. The reason is Donald Trump.
Indeed, as Peter Laffin has argued, “Trump-Vance is the most anti-life Republican administration in history.” During the 2024 campaign, Trump rigged the GOP party platform process so as to exclude pro-lifers and ram through a removal of the pro-life plank. He actively opposed Republican efforts at the state level to restrict abortion. He has actively supported IVF, which kills more embryos than abortion does. He has urged Republicans to be more “flexible” on the Hyde Amendment, which bans the use of federal funds for abortion. Trump and Vance promised during the 2024 campaign to preserve access to abortion pills, and the administration has kept that promise.
Yet abortion pills are the means for the majority of abortions in the United States today. As Laffin notes:
Trump’s DOJ-enforced and FDA-approved mail-order abortion regime effectively nullifies the overturning of Roe v. Wade. That’s because, in practice, it all but guarantees the right to an abortion no matter what state you live in. Under the current rules, abortion providers in blue states freely ship their product into red states. This availability of mifepristone via “telehealth” providers largely accounts for the climbing total of abortions nationally since the fall of Roe.
It is true that opposition to late-term abortion remains in the GOP platform and is still part of standard GOP rhetoric. But the significance of this fact should not be overstated. Early-term abortions are no less murderous than late-term abortions. They are simply less grisly. And pro-lifers are in other contexts sensitive to the fact that the grisliness of a practice is not what is fundamentally at issue when determining whether it counts as murder.
For example, they vigorously condemn euthanasia and assisted suicide as murder, even when they are carried out painlessly. Hence, if pro-lifers express outrage when Democrats support late-term abortion, then they should also express outrage when Republicans like Trump support abortion pills and the like.
As it happens, though, too many pro-lifers who are rightly outraged by what Governor Healey has done have over the last two years either kept silent about Trump’s betrayals or offered only muted criticism. This shows how far the tail of partisanship has come to wag the dog of principle. Pro-lifers have tended to support the GOP because they believe it is the party more likely to promote their goals.
But that will be true only to the extent that pro-lifers make it clear that the GOP will pay a political price for betraying them. If instead they remain silent in the face of betrayals, they will ensure that the Republican Party will move even further away from pursuing any serious pro-life policies. It is not they who will be using the GOP for their ends, but the GOP that will be using them for its ends.
Some pro-lifers nevertheless rationalize relatively uncritical support for Trump and the GOP on the grounds that they are the lesser of two evils. In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis noted the dangers of this kind of thinking:
I feel a strong desire to tell you – and I expect you feel a strong desire to tell me – which of these two errors is the worse. That is the devil getting at us. He always sends errors into the world in pairs – pairs of opposites. And he always encourages us to spend a lot of time thinking which is the worse. You see why, of course? He relies on your extra dislike of the one error to draw you gradually into the opposite one. But do not let us be fooled. We have to keep our eyes on the goal and go straight through between both errors. We have no other concern than that with either of them. (p. 145)
When we stay silent about a purportedly lesser evil, we end up aiding and abetting that evil rather than merely avoiding the greater evil. The thing to do is to oppose all evils, whether great, small, or in between. That requires putting all political parties and politicians at arm’s length, and vigorously criticizing any and all of them when they promote policies at odds with respect for the lives of the unborn.

A sad but true observation. Feser puts the “derangement” in Trump Derangement Syndrome. I fear he has an incurable case of it.
He seems to be impressed with himself when he states common knowledge as though he discovered consistent pro-life values for the first time. Values that pro-lifers have only been discussing in thousands of forums for half a century.
Except when he flat out lies or ignores the defunding of abortion support in foreign aid expenditures.
I’d like to know what useful thing Feser has ever done to help women in crisis pregnancies that compare with the heroic efforts of thousands of Republican activists over the decades.
Republicans are a loathsome, reprehensible bunch, no question.

I like the clear thinking that Dr. Feser displays in this article, especially the C. S. Lewis quote. I hate to sound like Johnny One-Note, but unless people stop voting for Republicans– regardless of who or what might be opposing them– they will never have to deliver on anything, and in fact we are already seeing the fruit of that misguided support of Republicans simply because they are not Democrats. The baby in the womb doesn’t care if it was a Democrat or a Republican who supported– or allowed– his murder. Meanwhile, the Republicans keep drifting further and further to the left while ostensibly pro-life voters keep choosing “the lesser evil,” which is still evil and becoming more and more evil by the day. Pro-life voters need to wake up and smell the coffee. Voting for the lesser evil is a proven failure, time and time again. It won’t work the next time, either. Vance has already lost my vote in 2028 unless he does a complete turnaround, which isn’t likely as long as he feels beholden to Trump.
If we do not vote Republican, more Democrats will be elected and even more abortions will occur. When an election occurs, we must vote for whichever candidate’s election will result in fewer abortions. In most cases that means voting Republican while at the same time pressing the argument that all abortions take a human life and should be banned. It will likely be a long and difficult struggle. Our best hope may be a Supreme Court decision banning the taking of innocent human lives by abortion.
It is not enough to vote Republican. Conservatives must private school (carefully selected schools) or homeschool their children. And then carefully select the college and/or major.
You do realize college students are adults?
Adults who we don’t trust with alcohol until 21 and who Avis won’t trust with one of their cars until they are 25 and who can remain on parents health insurance until they are 26.
This was observed in a New York Times Magazine Article in August 2010. It hasn’t gotten better.

The idea that Mom and Dad should have to scrimp and save from the time the stick turns blue until HS graduation and then have no say in the choice of school or major is what has allowed the growth of nonsense majors and the noxious sense of entitlement that was first noticed among some Millennials.
Yes,college students are adults and adults can be responsible for their own tuition . And board if necessary.
I have 8 children and they paid their own way. One drove a tractor and did landscaping and repairs on campus to pay for their room and board. I’ve never suggested any course of study or major to them.
These days I’m not sure I’d suggest college in the first place.

Abortion is a criminal activity. Being law does not change the nature of crime in law but actually it engages the higher levels of culpability.

I wouldn’t call Trump pro-life, certainly not to the extent of the political martyrdom that would be required for a politician to be truely and openly pro-life from conception, but he at least is not pro-abortion, and is opposed to it to some extent. And he doesn’t support lawfare against pro-lifers, particularly those that are average Joes, not holding high public office.
Every Democrat alternative to him is far worse. No third party will win a presidential election.
While voting comes from what we believe and what we consider important and therefore is a moral act, we vote for office-holders, not ideologies, because this is a Republic, not a Democracy. Hence, we can vote for the lesser of two evils even where it would be immoral and heretical to agree with him. Similar to how you can choose one man over another to fix your roof, even if you disagree with both on roof repair methods. Unlike roof repair, there isn’t an option for having no president.

At the voting booth, women vote more than men. To even suggest that affirming, the essence of being, in essence, a human person, a beloved son or daughter, is a State’s Right Issue and not a Human’s Right Issue is the lie from the start. I recognize that Trump has done a great deal for the pro-life cause, and I wish that he would be even more pro-life.
But if he looks at the Church he might reasonably wonder where that would get him. After Biden was elected the USCCB had their November meeting where they were going to address how to deal with a Catholic president who was militantly pro-abortion. How they decided to deal with it was to ignore it and plan a Eucharistic Congress. Who could argue with that?
Then with Biden publicly receiving the Eucharist many laity raised questions. Canon 915 states that the Eucharist is not to be given to manifest grave sinners. There are bishops and cardinals who stated forcefully that they would not deny Biden the Eucharist. Since the Eucharist is not to be given to manifest grave/mortal sinners, one might easily think that the bishops/cardinals do not believe that promoting the killing of the unborn is a serious moral matter. Logically that would be the conclusion.
And then, with Cardinal Cupich planning to give one of the most pro-abortion senators a lifetime achievement award what is Trump to think about that? Added to that Pope Leo said that if one was against abortion but for the death penalty one was not really pro-life. Equating an intrinsic evil with something the Church had taught was moral for over 1900 years?
What is a non-Catholic president, who can also look at the CARA data on how many Catholics believe there should be exceptions for abortion, supposed to think?

Trump did nominate 3 Supreme Court justices — Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Coney Barrett, who did vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, for which I, for one am quite grateful.
SCOTUS just obliged Trump and punted the can to the States. They didn’t overturn anything. Cowards all, just like their boss.
SCOTUS did not have the authority to do anything else other than overturn the fictional Constitutional right to abortion. Your own pro-abortion moral cowardice does not allow for rational thought.

The Supreme Court does not have the authority to legislate statutory law. It only has the authority to strike down unconstitutional law in accord with the limited enumerated powers delegated to the federal government.
Common sense would also know that judgment by fiat against abortion would trigger a massive civil war. The Commies now seeking office to eliminate the Constitution would not have to wait. State victories are the only feasible way to restrict abortion. Gradualism is the only way possible. I watched a documentary about Japan’s increasing dementia population. Ditto for Singapore. Some of Singapore’s apartment blocks have large images of an animal or another image on the exterior to help residents with dementia recognize where they live.

Overturning Roe was meant to return regulation to the states. That was the whole point. Not a federal abolition. One step at a time…
If the world ended tomorrow it would be Judgment Day, no next step possible.

When overturning Roe looked like a real possibility we kept hearing from the other side that an anti-choice apocalypse would be released, women would be dying in droves, Democracy would end, etc.

Trump never made any secret of his deficiencies in his IVF, pro-life and also LGBT stances. All were quite public and clear.
That Biden, Harris, and nearly every Democrat in federal office is far worse is equally public and clear.
This has to be fought in the political realm, by voting and such. But it will not be won there. A majority of Mass-attending Catholics have views on abortion legalization, IVF, and legal homosexual “marriage” that are as bad as Trump’s or worse. We can start with conversion. Priests can preach on it. Laity can evangelize. Everyone can pray about it. Nothing less will fix this problem.

I’m always curious why the father of the child in question never seems to be held to account to “sponsor” the mom.
My neighbor said the boyfriend either proposed to the girl or got on that day’s last train out, during the years he grew up.
Often, because they don’t have the money to do so, and forcing them to work is illegal. Otherwise, the court system does require them to pay some sort of child support, and if they have a job, their wages can be garnished.
Somehow, the sex ed classes don’t seem to mention that unwed motherhood is one of the biggest causes of poverty, and any man who wants to fornicate with a woman, is de facto saying he does not care about her future. Gives the lie to any claim of “love” he might make.
A mom usually should look to her husband to support her and their child.

The only time I hear from my Bishop is when their favorite bees (illegals) are in their bonnet. Oh yeah, that and for the annual begathon. With regard to the latter, the way it works here (and I presume everywhere else), is they issue a ransom amount for some algorithmically determined amount to all the pastors, who then need to pressure pewsitters so the regular collection isn’t skimmed.
TPR: But it’s worse than that. Here’s how the extortion game works. Every parish in a diocese is assessed a minimum amount that MUST BE SENT TO THE DIOCESE NO MATTER WHAT. However, if a pastor is good at extracting money from his parishioerand COLLECTS MORE THAN THE ASSESSED AMOUNT, the pastor gets to KEEP THAT EXTRA MONEY. What a game of extortion!
Our bishop supports a shelter for homeless expectant mothers & their children. And our parish & other parishes take up a yearly collection for the shelter & the pregnancy help center nextdoor.
Is it too much to ask that every deanery in a diocese have a home to care for vilnerable pregnant women and those with small babies as a foil to abortion and as promoting doing what is right?
Shouldn’t EVERY parish sponsor an assisted living facility for members of its parish in order to counter the push toward euthanizing the elderly?
Many in our parish are one or two steps away from being in such a facility. My understanding is you pay the bill, or they take your SS and pensions checks to satisfy the charges, and may bill Medicare for any remainder. They also give you a small allowance retention for getting your hair cut or set, and money for snacks. Perhaps one in the industry on here could clarify?
Our archdiocese developed and operated such a home for some seven or thereabout years. For 5-7 women, it required at least one full-time staff person as “house mother” for supervision, so the cost was not sustainable. The scuttlebutt was that the young moms did not follow house rules (which were not unreasonably restrictive) about boyfriend guest hours and prohibited overnights, substances, basic chore performance, and job-prep or seeking courses, etc. The cost in human and financial terms became too great for the archdiocese…without saints stepping up to help…and there were none at that time…
Is there a brochure or web address available for reference? Actively supporting the mothers without resources, homeless or not, is one way we can fight the ilk like Prop 3 in MI and planned non parenting. thanks!

Ultimately, we should not be looking to any government or political party to do what is our responsibility to do as believers. We change the culture by changing individuals, and individuals will only change when they are transformed by the Holy Spirit through the preaching of the gospel.
Indeed. And that change can be effected by prayer, fasting, almsgiving, evangelization, and all the other works of mercy. The USCCB has an annual day of penance for life, and we are certainly not limited to it.

Even pro-lifers are not necessarily pro-life: majorities continue to support contraception and even IVF. It is a tiny, vocal minority that shun contraception and IVF.

And while fornication and having children-out-of-wedlock is not “supported,” it doesn’t really need to be. It is the norm. To the people that are pro life Trump’s lies matter.

Trump has his own privately held convictions, unanswered questions. Whether he expresses them politically is another matter. His life agenda has been success. Like anyone who places an ideal first, what is true is frequently compromised for achieving that ideal of being a winner.

I will. It’s not complicated. Catholics who are actually Catholic are pro-life. Catholics who are anti-Catholic bigots are not.
Most Mass-going Catholics think abortion should be legal until some stage in the pregnancy, or under some set of circumstances. Most Mass-going Catholics are only about ten percentage points different from the average American on any given morals-related question.
But if you look at the pro-life movement, Catholics are very disproportionately involved. In the vicinity of 3 times the number of Protestants as Catholics in the country, and 3 times the number of Catholics in front of the abortion clinics and at the March 4 Life. When Catholics actually believe what the Church teaches, we care very much about abortion, and act accordingly.
That is why parish priests preaching the whole of the Catholic Faith could have an enormous impact on the moral life of the entire country.
Allow me to say that what you write is false because I am Catholic and I care about ending the objective evil of abortion. So it is an error to say that “Catholics” do not care about abortion.
More interesting is to know what Catholics do care about if they do not care about abortion. My bet is that these Catholics prioritize personal autonomy, pleasure, power, money and perhaps popularity. These things of the world will eventually be aborted as well.
Speaking of Truth, if some (even most) Catholics do not care about abortion, then these folks do not care about Christ because the Truth is that Christ is the Only Way to Life (see John 14:6). It is impossible to be with the aborted children of God in Heaven unless we are eternally at peace with each of them in the Mystical Body. For each of the aborted are not dead. We will all meet again when we enter eternal life.
Sins crying out for vengeance are judgment upon individuals as well as groups and, ultimately, nations. And what you have happening in the nations acceding to abortion is both wanton vile murdering, oppressions, complicity and beguiling.

I’ve known two women who have had abortions. One aborted the child of a one night stand with a much younger male that occurred just prior to beginning a relationship with a man closer to her age, so obviously that was inconvenient. I know about the first woman’s abortion because she attempted emotional blackmail (take me or we’re not friends) of a mutual coworker in seeking an escort to the “facility”.
After the advent of social media, her profile appeared to be that of a twice divorced woman with children and later grandchildren, supporting and participating a variety of charitable and civic activities. However, in any year with an election between a pro-abortion candidate and one that offered even mild objections, her feed became an unhinged and ferocious denunciation of the candidate not supporting abortion.
There’s millions just like her looking to suffocate their conscience with legality. Every abortion adds to that single issue consistency-most politicians are going along with them.
And a large part of exagerated environmentalism is from the moral displacement that a guilty conscience needs. Getting rid of inconvenient life is desperate compensation by reiterating the overpopulation myth that strains the environment.
People also seek to assuage abortion/contraception guilt by purchasing a baby stroller in which to pamper and parade their pets into all type of public establishments (restaurants, grocery stores, even churches). The pets are perhaps licensed as ’emotional support animals’ with county governments increasingly protecting their presence in previously prohibited places.
