Nancy Pelosi “does religion on Sunday”, but…

…  is clueless about Church teaching on all seven days of the week.

From the Washington Examiner‘s “Beltway Confidentail” blog:

“I do my religion on Sundays, in church, and I try to go other days of the week; I don’t do it at this press conference,” Pelosi said curtly as a reporter asked about her view of the church position on contraception.

Pelosi brushed off the organizations and church dioceses that filed suing the Obama administration over the contraception mandate. “I don’t think that’s the entire Catholic Church,” she said. “Those people have a right to sue, but I dont think they’re speaking ex cathedra for the Catholic Church.”

Because, of course, the Church’s teaching about contraception is still very much up in the air and open to endless discussion. And the position of the bishops in the U.S. regarding the HHS mandate is, well, unclear. And Pope Benedict XVI’s remarks to the bishops during their January ad limina visit about threats to religious freedom—”the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness presented by a radical secularism” and so forth—were vague and hazy. Ahem.

One suspects that if Jesus Christ himself appeared to Nancy Pelosi and said, “Here is my teaching on contraception, abortion, and homosexuality”, she would probably glare at him and tersely retort, “You have every right to say what you want, but I don’t think you are speaking for the Father or the Holy Spirit.”
